Louse as seen through a microscope
Life Cycle
The life cycle from nit to louse
The life cycle of nits to head lice is very important to understanding reinfestations.
Reproductively mature
females lay 8-10 eggs a
day.
Eggs/Nits are glued to
the hairshaft by the insect.
The nit/egg takes 14-20 days to hatch.
NOTE: It is at this stage when
nits are maturing to
nymphs that people
think they are rid of
head lice...then they
hatch.
A newly hatched
nymph needs to find a
human bloodmeal
quickly.
A nymph (male or
female) reach
reproductive maturity
in 7 days from
hatching.
At day 7 the mature
adults will reproduce
and create 8-10 eggs a
day.
